Vegetarian Benefits
The benefits of being a vegetarian are vast and quite frankly, exciting. Within our articles and resources we will explore the various benefits of this lifestyle and what it has to offer you, not only from a health aspect, but the social, moral, ethical and spiritual aspects too. Whether or not all of these aspects interest you, you can take from what we offer the points that interest you the most.
Health Benefits:
By far, one of the biggest reasons someone will transition into vegetarianism is for the many health benefits this lifestyle offers. Not only can you physically tell from the way your body reacts to a meatless diet, but in later times there have been many clinical studies that also discuss the various health components. The benefits of a vegetable based diet can include (but not limited to):
- Lose weight, and lower risk of obesity
- Lower cholesterol
- Forms of reduction in heart disease, cardiovascular diseases, and some forms of cancer.
- A diet which is typically lower in saturated fat, and higher in fibre
- Increased exercise/aerobic performance
One point we will note here is that when we discuss vegetarian health benefits, we are discussing vegetarian based foods that are wholesome foods, and not foods that are packed-full of empty calories, junk food, and meat replacement based foods etc.
Environmental Benefits:
Looking beyond our own personal benefits of vegetarianism, there are many environmental benefits too that should be considered. These benefits can include (but not limited to):
- Reduced global warming as a result of reduced animal-raising
- Reduced greenhouse gasses as a result of reduced animal raising
- Reduced water requirements of vegetables compared to animal-raising
- Reduced water pollution caused by animal waste, chemicals, pesticides etc.
- Reduced consumption of antibiotics, growth hormones and chemical
Moral Benefits:
Of course, the biggest moral benefit of a vegetarian lifestyle is the goodwill of knowing you are helping to take a stand against animal cruelty. It is truly heartbreaking when you see images of mass-producing farms of cattle, pigs, chickens and the inhumane conditions many of these farms places animals through.
Of course, we are very much aware that some governments and regions are tightening laws on these types of farms. However, unfortunately in some countries and regions, even animal-based products that are labelled as ‘free range’ are not necessarily regulated or accurate. You sometimes never know where the animal has come from (particularly if they are imported from another country/non-regulated region) and what conditions they were previously exposed to.
It might seem like you are only one person, and what difference does that make to the reduction of animal cruelty? However, you are one person in an ever-increasing vegetarian community that is making a slow yet positive difference to the awareness of animal cruelty.
